O.S.C. Industrial Fume and Dust Extractor Purchasing Guide
Are you planning to purchase an industrial fume and dust extractor but unsure how to choose the right model? This article will clarify the differences among three odor treatment technologies (Wet Scrubber, Filter-based, Electrostatic Precipitator), and also detail the characteristics of tar often associated with laser-cutting wood, helping you quickly determine the most suitable filtration solution.
Air Pollutants Generated by Processing are Divided into Two Major Types
Dust / Particulates
Large amounts of dust and fine suspended particulates generated during processing
E.g., metal dust, carbonized dust, etc.
Used with: Dust Collector
Odor (VOC, Burnt smell, Plastic smell, Oil Fume)
Volatile gases and fumes generated during processing
E.g., plastic smell, burnt smell, oil fume, etc.
Used with: Industrial Fume and Odor Filter Unit
I. Five Common Pollutants in Industrial Processing
● Laser Processing (Wood, Bamboo, Acrylic, Leather): Wood laser cutting generates a large amount of highly viscous, strong-smelling tar.
● CNC Cutting Dust (Wood, PVC, FR4, Foam)
● Flux Fumes from Soldering Operations
● Plastic Odor (VOC) from 3D Printing (ABS, PA, PC)
● Volatile Odors from IPA, Alcohol, and Solvents.
II. Main Purpose of Industrial Fume and Odor Filter Unit: Odor Removal
The core of industrial odor treatment is: removing burnt, plastic, chemical, combustion, oil fume odors, and VOCs.
Main Functions of Odor Filter Unit:
● Burnt odor removal
● Plastic VOC adsorption
● Floor-standing type: Covers the entire workbench area, taking up more space but still reserving enough room for other equipment.
● Desktop type: Covers only the workbench area, saves space, suitable for small-scale processing scenarios.
● Customizable: Different appearances can be designed based on processing needs and spatial layout.
III. Three Technologies for Odor Filtration
1. Wet Scrubber (Including Ceramic Packing)
2. Filter-based (HEPA + Activated Carbon)
3. Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP)
IV. Wet Scrubber (General Washing + Ceramic Wet Scrubber Tower)
Advantages:
● Can handle dust and water-soluble gases
● Ceramic packing can enhance the absorption capacity for water-soluble odors
Disadvantages:
● Not suitable for organic burnt odors (acrylic burnt smell, wood tar)
● Tar reacts with water to form sludge, which is extremely difficult to clean
● Water tank is prone to foul odor, requiring frequent water changes
● Limited effect on plastic VOCs
Conclusion:
Not applicable for laser-cutting wood, laser-cutting acrylic, leather, or 3D VOCs.
V. Filter-based (HEPA + Activated Carbon)
Advantages:
● Excellent particulate filtration efficiency
● Activated carbon can adsorb some odors
Disadvantages:
● High filter material cost (HEPA, Activated Carbon)
● Wood tar from laser cutting can clog HEPA filters
● Extremely high consumable cost for large-volume processing
Conclusion:
Suitable for classrooms and small environments.
Not suitable for factories with continuous processing.
VI. Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) — The Industrial Fume and Odor Filtration Technology Recommended by O.S.C.
Advantages:
● Almost **no consumables**: No HEPA needed, only cleaning of the collector plates
● Can handle tar and resin fumes: Wood tar is adsorbed onto the plates, and performance can be restored after cleaning
● High and **non-attenuating airflow**: Does not decrease due to filter clogging
● Can be paired with downstream activated carbon for **"odor removal enhancement"**: ESP handles the fumes in the front stage, and activated carbon handles the odor in the back stage, achieving the highest efficiency and longest lifespan
Disadvantages:
● Requires cleaning of the collector plates
● Very small amounts of ozone can be controlled by downstream adsorption
Conclusion:
Most suitable for laser-cutting wood, bamboo, acrylic, rubber, and long-duration processing.
VII. Comparison of the Three Systems (Including Tar Handling)
Wet Scrubber (General Washing + Ceramic Wet Scrubber Tower)
Overview:
● Medium smoke removal, Weak odor removal
● Forms sludge when encountering tar, difficult to clean
Filter-based (HEPA + Activated Carbon)
Overview:
● Strong smoke removal, Medium odor removal
● Easily clogged by tar, Highest consumable cost
Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP)
Overview:
● **Strongest smoke removal**, tar does not clog filters, can be restored by cleaning
● Best odor removal effect when paired with activated carbon, lowest long-term cost
VIII. Dust Collector is Required for CNC Processing
Main Pollutants:
● Dust (Wood dust, PVC dust, FR4 fiberglass dust, foam powder)
● CNC processing **does not generate odor**
Conclusion:
● CNC → **Dust Collector Main System**
● Pair with an odor filter unit for downstream removal of trace VOCs if necessary
IX. Recommended Configurations for Different Processing Scenarios
Laser Wood, Bamboo:
● **ESP Main Unit + Downstream Activated Carbon**
● Tar can be captured by ESP and will not clog the filter
Laser Acrylic:
● **ESP + Activated Carbon**
CNC Cutting:
● **Dust Collector as Main Unit**
● Add Odor Filter Unit for trace VOCs if necessary
3D Printing:
● **ESP + Activated Carbon**
Soldering:
● **Filter-based** (Classroom) or **ESP** (Multi-station)
